Simple pendulum determination of the gravitational constant.
We determined the Newtonian constant of gravitation G by interferometrically measuring the change in spacing between two free-hanging pendulum masses caused by the gravitational field from large tungsten source masses. We find a value for G of (6.672 34±0.000 14)×10(-11) m3 kg(-1) s(-2). This value is in good agreement with the 1986 Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) value...
متن کاملA simple pendulum laser interferometer for determining the gravitational constant.
We present a detailed account of our 2004 experiment to measure the Newtonian constant of gravitation with a suspended laser interferometer. The apparatus consists of two simple pendulums hanging from a common support. Each pendulum has a length of 72 cm and their separation is 34 cm. A mirror is embedded in each pendulum bob, which then in combination form a Fabry-Perot cavity. A laser locked ...
متن کاملThe (Not So) Simple Pendulum
Pendulums are the defining feature of pendulum clocks, of course, but today they don’t elicit much thought. Most modern “pendulum” clocks simply drive the pendulum to provide a historical look, but a great deal of ingenuity originally went into their design in order to produce highly accurate clocks. This essay explores horologic design efforts that were so important at one time—not gearwork, w...
متن کاملDetermination of the Binding Constant of Terbium-Transferrin
Apotransferrin (apo Tf) in 0.1 M N-(2hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N2-ethanesulfanic acid at 25 ˚C and pH 7.4 has been titrated with acidic solution of Tb3+. The binding of Tb3+ at the two specific metal-binding sites of transferrin was followed from the changes in the difference UV spectra at 245 nm. The molar absorptivity per binding site for Tb3+...
متن کاملDetermination of the Stability Constant of Vanadium (V) with Alaine
Formation equilibria of dioxy vanadium (V) complex with alanine in acidic media (pH<2.3) has been investigated potentiometrically and spectrophotometrically. In this condition the 1:1 complex has the formula VO2Y, where Y¯ represent the fully dissociated aminocarboxylate anion. The stability constant of VO2Y was determined as log KVO2Y=11.32±<e...
